How Much Do You Write Each Day?

I’ll Start, 1,000-1,500 words.

I aim for writing 1,500 but when I fall short I always hit 1,000 words written. I do this because it forces writing to be a habit. It makes it a priority. It’s the only way to make sure I hit my goals.

I have friends that want to write books. I’ve written 3 (that will never be again published as they are first works and total rubbish) and published only an unrelated collection.

The first time you played basketball were you good at it? Nope.

Your first book will probably be just as awful as you once were at basketball or roller-skating. Writing isn’t the easiest thing in the world. It’s not just typing. Nowadays publishing isn’t either (it probably never was). Even if you self-publish on Kindle you have to learn to creative covers, format, advertise, and market your book to the right audience or your book will jut sit there and sell nothing.

That’s why we write every day. Practice makes perfect? They say it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert. Writing for 1 hour a day would cause you to take nearly 30 years to become an expert. Maybe it will take you less time. Maybe you don’t want to be an expert. Still, writing only once or twice a week will not your book finished. Good writing takes consistency just like any other skill people strive to be good at.

I don’t just blog, I write books too! Check out some of my work here.

  1. I’m in a bit of a writing slump at the moment, can’t motivate myself. I can relate to what you say about starting out. I’ve put my first book in the attic because every time I read any of it, I think of how I could have improved on it.

  2. I’m currently in the editing/revision phase of my WIP, but I usually write between 1000-2000 words a day when I’m writing. I’m going to have to split the difference of this in November for NaNoWriMo when I’m going to attempt to write a full novel in one month for the first time (not first time writing a novel I’ve technically done that twice, but in a month is going to be the challenge). The most words I’ve written in a day is probably 3000-5000. It was a weekend, and I stayed up until around 3 in the morning. It was glorious.
